You've seen it everywhere. Water purifier ads, filter comparison videos, concerned WhatsApp forwards from family members. The number that everyone obsesses over when it comes to water quality: TDS.

Buy a TDS meter. Check your water. If the number is high, your water is bad. If the number is low, your water is good.

It sounds logical. It's also completely misleading when it comes to hard water and it's causing thousands of people across India to either buy the wrong solution or give up on fixing their water altogether because their "TDS looks fine."

This blog sets the record straight. Here's what TDS actually is, why it is the wrong measure for hard water, and how a hard water softener for shower actually solves the problem without touching that number at all.

What TDS Actually Is

TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids. It is a measure of the combined concentration of all inorganic and organic substances dissolved in water, expressed in milligrams per litre (mg/L) or parts per million (ppm). This includes minerals like calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, bicarbonates, sulphates, and chlorides as well as trace amounts of heavy metals, organic matter, and other dissolved compounds.

A TDS meter works by measuring the electrical conductivity of water. Dissolved ions carry an electrical charge, so water with more dissolved solids conducts electricity more readily, and the meter converts that conductivity reading into a TDS estimate.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recommends drinking water TDS below 500 ppm, with an ideal range of 50–150 ppm. The WHO suggests below 300 ppm for palatability.

Here's the critical thing to understand: a TDS meter measures everything dissolved in water. It has no idea what those dissolved substances actually are.

It cannot tell you whether your water is hard or soft. It cannot tell you whether the minerals present are harmful or beneficial. It cannot tell you whether your water is damaging your hair and skin. It just gives you a number and that number, on its own, means very little for hard water hair loss or hard water damage to skin and hair.

Why TDS Is the Wrong Measure for Hard Water

Hard water is specifically defined by its concentration of calcium and magnesium ions. These two minerals are what cause limescale buildup in bathroom fittings, what make your shampoo ineffective, what clog your hair follicles, and what leave that hard water white residue on skin after every shower.

But calcium and magnesium are just two of the dozens of dissolved substances that a TDS meter picks up. Here's why this matters:

  • Water could have a high TDS reading but low hardness if the dissolved solids are primarily sodium, potassium, or bicarbonates rather than calcium and magnesium. This water would read as "bad" on a TDS meter but would actually be soft water that lathers well and is gentle on hair and skin.
  • Conversely, water could have a moderate TDS reading but extremely high hardness if the dissolved solids are predominantly calcium and magnesium. This water would read as "acceptable" on a TDS meter but would be actively damaging your hair, causing limescale buildup, and making every haircare product you own significantly less effective.

In fact, some of the most problematic borewell water sources in cities like Delhi and Bangalore sit in what many people would consider an "acceptable" TDS range while still being severely hard and causing significant hard water damage to skin and hair.

The measure you actually need: water hardness

The correct measure is water hardness, expressed in milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre (mg/L CaCO₃). Here's how it's classified:

Most urban Indian water supplies whether municipal or borewell fall in the hard to very hard range. A TDS meter will not tell you this. Only a hardness test will.
