Why Testing Matters Before You Buy
If you are experiencing hair fall, dry skin, or limescale buildup in your bathroom, hard water is a likely cause. But "likely" is not the same as "confirmed" — and understanding the severity of your water hardness helps you choose the right filtration solution.
Very hard water (500+ mg/L TDS) requires denser filtration media and more frequent cartridge replacement than moderately hard water. Knowing where you sit on the hardness scale helps you understand what to expect from a filter and when to replace the cartridge.

Method 1: TDS Meter Test (Most Accurate)
A TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter is a small electronic device that measures the total concentration of dissolved substances in water. It does not distinguish between calcium, magnesium, sodium, or other minerals it gives you a single number representing the sum of all dissolved solids in mg/L (or ppm, which is equivalent).

How to test:

Method 2: The Soap Lather Test (Quickest)
Hard water minerals react with soap and prevent it from lathering freely. This simple test uses that property to give you a quick qualitative assessment.
What you need: A clean, clear plastic bottle with a lid. A few drops of pure liquid soap (not detergent use castile soap or similar). Your tap water.
How to test:

Fill the bottle approximately one-third full with your tap water.

Add 5 drops of liquid soap.

Close the bottle and shake it vigorously for 10 seconds.

Interpreting the result:
Plenty of fluffy bubbles, water below looks fairly clear: Your water is soft or only mildly hard. The soap has lathered freely, which happens when minerals are not consuming the soap molecules.
Few bubbles, milky or cloudy water below: Your water is moderately to very hard. The minerals have reacted with the soap to form scum rather than lather. The cloudiness is the soap-mineral compound in suspension.
Almost no bubbles, distinctly milky or greyish water: Very hard water. This result is common in Hyderabad, outer Bangalore, and borewell-dependent buildings across Indian cities.
This test is qualitative, not quantitative. It tells you whether you have hard water but not exactly how hard. Combine it with a TDS meter reading for a complete picture.
Method 3: Visual and Sensory Signs
Your home is already running a continuous hard water test. Here is how to read the results.
White or grey deposits on taps and showerheads: This is calcium carbonate (limescale) left behind as hard water evaporates. If you see it on fixtures, you have hard water. The thicker and more extensive the deposits, the harder the water.
Glass shower screen staining: Hard water leaves a white, etched film on glass that standard cleaning products struggle to remove. This is mineral deposition and is a reliable indicator of high hardness.
Soap scum in the bathroom: The film that forms on tiles, bathtub surfaces, and inside the shower is the reaction product of soap and hard water minerals. Significant soap scum formation indicates moderate to hard water.
Hair texture after washing: If your hair consistently feels rough, dry, and tangled immediately after washing even with good shampoo mineral deposition is the likely cause. This is one of the most commonly reported early signs.
Skin tightness after washing face: Hard water leaves a fine mineral film on skin. If your face feels tight, dry, or somehow unclean even immediately after washing, mineral residue is the cause.
Kettle or water heater scale: Open your kettle. If there is a white or chalky deposit on the heating element or base, your water is hard. The same thing is happening inside your geyser, washing machine, and other appliances that heat water.
Clothes stiffness after washing: If clothes feel stiff and rough after washing despite using fabric softener, hard water minerals are depositing in the fabric fibres.
Understanding Your Results
Two of the three methods point in the same direction: your water is likely hard if you are in Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi NCR, or Pune.
The more important question is: what level of hardness? And the TDS meter gives you the clearest answer.
Below 300 mg/L: Mild hard water. Basic filtration is beneficial but the urgency is lower.
300–500 mg/L: Hard water. Filtration is recommended. Hair, skin, and appliance effects are present and will worsen over time without intervention.
Above 500 mg/L: Very hard water. Filtration is strongly recommended. Effects are significant and will compound. Appliance damage is actively occurring.
What to Do After Testing
If your TDS reads above 300 mg/L, or if the soap test shows minimal lather, or if you have visible scale deposits, you have actionable hard water.

FAQ
My TDS reads 450 mg/L. Is that really bad? 450 mg/L is firmly in the "hard" range. It is above the Bureau of Indian Standards recommended maximum of 500 mg/L total dissolved solids for domestic use. You will likely see noticeable hair and skin effects, and appliance scale buildup will be active.
